Supported in Focal until April 2021?

Asked by Mohamed Hafez

I know that even though it's been moved to universe in Bionic, Bionic's openjdk-8 package will continue to receive security updates there until April 2021 (https://ubuntu.com/blog/announcing-openjdk-11-packages-in-ubuntu-18-04-lts). Can we count on that for Focal as well?

The announcement that you are referring to was made at a moment, when Ubuntu focal did not exist yet.

I assume that (if the statement is still valid), not only Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 but of course also 20.04 will receive updates.

Just a disclaimer: There is a deadline mentioned of April 2021 (the EOL date of Ubuntu 16.04). Standard support for Ubuntu 18.04 will run until April 2023, and Ubuntu 20.04 until April 2025. The announcement does not tell anything about these longer periods.

I guess that everything will be dependent on the future of the https://wiki.openjdk.java.net/display/jdk8u project and on the activities of the group that works on the Ubuntu openjdk packages (https://launchpad.net/~openjdk-r )

Can you help with this problem?
