nonfree modules are missing

Asked by mband

Hi,

The OpenCV 2.4 package from Debian has deliberately removed the nonfree modules from OpenCV. Does Ubuntu/Canonical have the same sort of policy or can I/we request that the OpenCV 2.4 package for Ubuntu gets the nonfree modules added?
The nonfree SIFT and SURF features were available in the OpenCV package for Ubuntu 12.04 (precise), and we would like to see them become part of the main package for Ubuntu again. If this requires a more dedicated package maintainer, then I could volunteer as I would be scratching our own (and hopefully others) itch, although my experience with deb packages is pretty limited.

If you mix packages from Debian in an Ubuntu install you will get issues due to dependencies.

Sorry, I did not express myself clearly enough.
I'm not mixing Debian packages with Ubuntu packages, but what I meant was that the Ubuntu OpenCV package is based on the OpenCV source code that is present in the Debian OpenCV package, where they deliberately removed the nonfree modules. My request is then to base the Ubuntu package on the original OpenCV source, where the nonfree modules are present.
This is also reported as a bug, but it hasn't seem any updates/progress the last few months, so I want to know the status of this and possible become a package maintainer if that is required to get the nonfree modules present in the (main) OpenCV package for Ubuntu.

Can you help with this problem?
