Spontaneous reversion to log-on screen

Asked by Terry Relph-Knight on 2012-05-24

Since upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 my machine keeps spontaneously reverting to the log-on screen. I would like to report this as a bug, but I cannot see how.

As far as I can tell the reversion to log-on is triggered when any video is running, although it does not always happen immediately video is displayed. Also fast scrolling in PDF documents seems to be quite a reliable trigger.

I have a dual Athlon 64bit machine with NVIDIA 8600GT graphics card. All the latest updates applied. It is set up to multiplte boot to Windows 7 and Linux Mint as well as Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I don't seem to have problems with video or instability when running Windows.

There're known issues with nvidia drivers and diverse workarounds, please click on 'Bugs' or 'Answers' on top of this page. Please review log files, Xorg.0.log, dmesg.

Can you help with this problem?
