I've an AMD64 HP Pavilion laptop with a builtin NVidia module.

I'm running up-to-date Precise LTS beta 2 and was unable to use this machine until today when I dropped back to Unity 2D as well.

PS for anyone that had autologin activated and are thus blocked from picking Unity2D because you're automatically booting into Unity 3D, edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and remove any lines referencing 'autologin'
