Why was 177 removed from Jaunty?

Asked by Andrew

I see that version 177.80 was removed from Jaunty, and there is only 173.14.16 and 180.44. I have been having lock-ups of my computer (full kernel hang) after upgrading to Jaunty, so wanted to try going back to 177.80, but it is gone.

I am curious, why was it removed when other other ones were not?

I believe it is due to most of the cards supported by the 177 are supported by the 180, Uninstall the 177 driver and run:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

you can then install the 180 driver ( I think that jockey driver thing will offer itself to you to use the right one )

I don't want 180 though, I want 177. I am trying to troubleshoot why Jaunty is locking up my computer when Intrepid never did. One possibility is that 180 is unstable. I will probably have to get 177 from the Intrepid repositories, but I wanted to know why it was removed when other older versions were not.

Every here and then nVidia drops support for some older graphics-cards on newer drivers. Those steps (or better ever the step before) is kept.
So we got:
71 - 96/100 - 173 - 177/180

That's what you mean? :-D
