bugs ntpdate 1:4.2.6.p3+dfsg-1ubuntu3.9

Asked by DLR

After using apt-get -dist-upgrade, my VM's guest OS, Ubuntu 12.04.5, system time was 8 hours off.
Wanted to know if this package could have caused such an outcome.

This sounds more like wrong configuration settings than a software bug.

Which OS is the host, which OS is the guest?
What settings do you want to have with respect to time - local time (standard for Windows systems) or UTC (standard for Ubuntu) - both on the host and in the guest system(s)?

Check your time zone too.

What technology are you using to virtualise?

Host in ESXi, vSphere 6.0. guest is Ubuntu 12.04.5, time sync should be with network NTP server. Both times that this has occurred it was right after running apt-get dist-upgrade.
The time got messed up this past Sunday, 7/24 again.
Our first attempt, months ago, at solving this problem was to sync time with the host, but that made it mess up again.
I'm looking into the link about Ubuntu Time.
