U14.04.1 is installed on hp 400Z work Station 32 bits. Grub loads program successfully. Display is blank. Alt-spx reisub sequence will reboot the computer. I am using live mode to run the system and generate these reports. I have tried all 3 drivers including two proprietory nvidia derivers listed in the additional drivers section of software updates. The monitor is one of three NEC MuultiSYNC LCD 195VX+ monitors and the only one being activated. Is there an nvidia driver for this vidieo card with 3D capability? I have 2 threads in ubuntu forums with minimal help.

Without knowing the issue you are having, the above output is worthless.

@Andrew: the problem description is at the very end of the Terminal output:

Your Terminal output shows the following error messages:

[ 5.612627] nouveau E[ VBIOS][0000:12:00.0] 0xe261[ ]: unknown opcode 0x00
[ 5.612629] nouveau E[ DEVINIT][0000:12:00.0] init failed, -22
[ 5.612631] nouveau E[ DRM] failed to create 0x80000080, -22

[ 5.482153] nouveau [ VBIOS][0000:12:00.0] checking PRAMIN for image...
[ 5.612356] nouveau [ VBIOS][0000:12:00.0] ... checksum invalid

This most likely means that the VBIOS is being read from the wrong location, usually the PCIROM method. Take a look at the earlier messages and look for a method that was rejected due to "checksum invalid". If there is such a method (e.g. PRAMIN), add nouveau.config=NvBios=PRAMIN to your kernel command line (or as a module option). [Obviously replace PRAMIN with whatever method was the one that gave the "checksum invalid" message.]

Thank you. You are right on the money and I don't know how to
implement your suggestion. What is a kernel command line? What is a
module option? Can you guide me step by step and/or tell me what files
I should access and modify. I visited the referenced page but it only
repeats the code here.

Run:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Find this line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

Change it to:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nouveau.config=NvBios=PRAMIN"

Save the new file and close gedit then run:
sudo update-grub

Reboot to test.

Just as additional command: As far as I can see from the documentation, the dedicated NVidia driver for your graphics card would be nvidia-graphics-drivers-304

You haven't changed /etc/default/grub correctly despite me telling you exactly how the line should look.

Scroll up and compare. ....

You are right. Here's the corrected code.
RUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nouveau.config=NvBios=PRAMIN"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
When I attempt to save it and close gedit it tells me its read only
and I can't save. What now? Still unanswered my question how do I
make permanent changes to installed ubuntu using a live disk boot?
Where is grub.cfg saved such that alive disk can access it?

I ran this. See code above. I corrected grub.cfg. I was unable to save
the amended file. I couldn't close gedit until I had cancelled my
changes. How do I save grub.cfg after changing it? All answers
welcome.

You have to start the editor with administrative rights that you are able to save the modified grub configuration file.

use the terminal command
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Can you help with this problem?
