NIS Slave server configuration: dpkg: version 'nis_3.17-18' has bad syntax: invalid character in version number

I get the above error when try to install NIS server on my Ubuntu 10.10, so unable to install NIS Slave server on my Ubuntu 10.10 virtual machine.

Here is the output of sudo apt-get install nis:

Maverick is EOL.There is no more support and no updates. I suggest you clean install Precise for a server. It is supported until 2017.
