neverball issue with joystick and camera mode

Asked by Jim Bauer

Not sure if this is a joystick issue or a bug in neverball

A while back I use to play neverball a fair amount (circa 19.10 and/or 20.04) and went back to it recently (21.04) and discovered the joystick didn't work like it use to.

When using the joystick and setting camera mode to chase (or lazy) everything looks ok until using the joystick to manually move the camera. Once that happens, it is like chase mode gets disabled (i.e. it acts like manual). Even changing the camera mode to something else and back to chase doesn't correct the issue.

This does not happen if doing the same thing (manually moving camera angle while in chase or lazy mode) with keyboard or mouse.

After moving the camera angle on the joystick, if I then move the camera angle via keyboard or mouse, then chase mode will start working again. I also noticed that sometimes, when doing the camera angle change via the keyboard (after doing so via joystick), it keep turning after releasing the key (s) until the other direction key (d) is pressed.

I tried unplugging the joystick and plugging it back it, but that didn't change anything. Nor did rebooting.

Any suggestions?

More info...

I installed Ubuntu 20.04 in a VirtualBox VM and installed the neverball package. It worked as expected there and the neverball version is nearly identical

Ubuntu 20.04.2 neverball 1.6.0+git20180603-2
Ubuntu 21.04 neverball 1.6.0+git20180603-3

and the diff between the two is fairly trivial

My suggestion would be file a bug report since
their are only 9 bug reports listed and none are the same to your situation.
Open Terminal [ctl+alt+t] type: ubuntu-bug neverball
This will start Apport to collect additional information to automatically
go with your bug report. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport
Otherwise the bug report will be incomplete.
Please put everything on your bug report copy paste from your hyperlink.
Thank You
