Neverputt design shortcomings

Asked by James F.

There are some design issues in Neverputt.

I am currently using Neverputt 1.6.0 on Ubuntu 18.04.

1) When the ball comes to rest, Neverputt will then preparesto start the next putt. But, the hole might have moving objects. If a moving object strikes the ball, the ball will move, and continue to move until the stroke is made. Sometimes, this results in the ball floating off of the course, making it impossible to avoid a penalty for hitting the ball off of the course.

Example: Reshaun's Easy Putt hole #8.

2) The ball can come to rest on a moving object. If this happens, and the ball remains on the object, the player will not be given an opportunity to putt. The player has to exit the game.

Example: Original course, hole 15. (This is the only hole where I have seen this happen.)

3) On some holes, it is possible for the ball to come to rest in a location where part of the course blocks the player's view of the ball. This can happen on holes with different levels. This makes it difficult to judge the distance to the hole or target and to aim the putt.

4) Reshaun's Easy Putt hole #2 seems to have invisible objects.

5) Settings are not saved. When I start Neverputt, I like to change the resolution, and the sound volumes. Neverputt used to save these changes.

I suggest you report a bug

I was thinking they aren't really bugs. But, do I report them using a single bug report, or should I make five separate bug reports?

Do you know whether this problem is there only in the Ubuntu package of neverputt, or if this is a weakness of neverputt as such? In the latter case it will not help creating a bug report in Ubuntu, but then you better contact http://neverball.org

Thanks!

The first four items would be weaknesses in Neverputt.

I don't know which case would apply for Neverputt not saving its settings. It's possible Neverputt saved its settings when I was using OpenSuSE and Ubuntu never had that feature. If that's the case, I guess I would ask for it as a feature request.

I can confirm that (at least for Ubuntu LTS releases), Neverputt used to remember the settings from its previous run. Doesn't do that now for me as well. Major pain is the rather loud and ruddy awful (sorry) music.

Did you report this? I'd hate to create an unnecessary duplicate, people have enough to do.

I found a fix for saving NeverPutt settings when using Ubuntu.

It's at http://neverforum.com/fmpbo/viewtopic.php?id=3389

It's been difficult to report problems at neverforum. The login mechanism was broken. I couldn't find another way to get in touch with them. Fortunately, in May, the people at Neverball finally noticed.
