I've lost the networking notification thingy even though I have the 'Notification Area'

Asked by Duncan Lithgow

I've had network problems after installing wicd and un-installing network-manager, and then trying to get back to the normal configuration...

Now I can connect to the wired network automatically, but I'm not getting the networking icon itself, so I can't select a wireless network.

I have network-manager, network-manager-gnome installed (and nm-applet doesn't seem to exist anymore) so why is this not working?

You should be able to access it through System > Preferences > Network Connections.

Thanks wojox, I can get there, but that's not what I was missing. That dialog doesn't show available network, only those I've already configured.

It seems that a system restart has fixed this issue, at least for now.

@wojox, I already had the 'Notification Area' working

@voidghost: I noticed it had started working while I was running your suggestion, which I have completed. So I don't think that was the issue. Thanks

I don't think you can change the Status to Solved yet, as I have the same problem. I installed Network, I have added Notification Area to my applets and I have restarted my laptop, but still now NetworkManager icon in my taskbar.

Hi Marius. I think it's right to leave this marked as solved because the cause of your problem might be quite different from the cause of mine.

I discovered my problem. For some or other reason, my Session Type at the Logon screen was changed from Gnome to Failsafe Gnome. After I changed it back to Gnome, everything was back to normal.
