Wireless connects at home, but not at my parents in law

Asked by kristoffer tjemsland

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10. At first, i couldn't get my wireless to connect at home. I could see the networks, but i coulden't connect, even though i entered the correct password. I fixed this by connecting it with an ethernet cable, updating the packages, reboot, and then it worked.

Now I am at my parents in law's house. They also have a wireless network, I can see it, but can't connect. Just as i couldn't at home. I tried the same: connecting via an ethernet cable, updating packages, but i still can't connect. I see the network, and I'm entering the correct password. What is wrong? How do i fix this? Also, when i "test" my network card, ubuntu asks me if my network card is "Atheros AR5001", but i know it is AR5007 (SiSoftSandra told me, in Vista). Does this mean anything of importance?

you can also use:

sudo lshw -C network

Linux doesnt need 3rd party stuff like windows. Use that output instead of a windows app. You need to use what Linux sees not what windows sees as you are configuring Linux.

Can you give the output of:

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scan; ifconfig

Thanks

I discovered i could connect to their neighbours network. They don't require a password. I still cannot connect to my inlaws network. Anyway.. as requested, output:

Ok the wifi is finding ESSIDs which is good (even if they do have weird names)

Can you give the output of:

cat /etc/network/interfaces

I opened terminal, and entered "cat /etc/network/interfaces" and got only this:

kristoffer@KRIS:~$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Im not understanding much of linux or the commands and all that, but i could see out of the output i first gave you, that the network i was trying to connect to, wasn't there. So, here the same output is again. The network i'm trying to connect to is called "Kodlekleiv 23". Thanks for taking your time about this issue! :)

Output of "sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scan; ifconfig" :

try installing wicd or wifi-radar

see if that helps. The device is working and is seeing the ESSID.

I first tried wifi-radar, but it locked down on me. Then i installed WICD, and it worked like a charm! Thanks for helping me out, actionparsnip! Really appreciate it! :D
