why dependent on client package (network-manager-gnome or kde4 plasma client)?

Asked by Luigi Capriotti

On both Jaunty and Karmic network-manager installs a graphical client too (network-manager-gnome or kde4 plasma client).
Wouldn't it possible to install the daemon only so that we could remove the dependency from gtk or qt4 and have a smaller footprint, sutable for minimal systems?

Thanks in advance

Hi Luigi,

These graphical clients are only recommended by the network-manager package (no real dependencies here), so you can safely remove them if you do not need them. Besides, if you want to install network-manager on a server/minimal installation for example, you can use "aptitude install --without-recommends network-manager" in a terminal, so that recommended packages won't be installed.

Cheers,
Sylvain
