network manager wireless/ modem connectivity

Asked by John Kelly

Hi,
using Jaunty
having been using WICD for quite a while now i had reason to switch back to network manager in order to use my vodafone modem stick while away from home. I now find that I have wireless connectivity and also modem stick conectivity all in one where I didnt have wireless before. Can anyone help me to understand why i now have wireless in network manager where i didnt have it before. Was it a result of an update at some stage or other!?
thanks
John

Hi

I think network manager has just been very smart at picking up on a wireless connection and deserves top marks. Try left-clicking on the icon and click the button "configure". In the config tool click on the "Mobile Broadband" tab and disable the vodafone line in there, or delete it if you must.

Hopefully that will force it to use your "Wired" setup but it might be worth checking that before leaving the config tool

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hello Tom,
everything is grand I was just wondering how is it I now have wireless whereas before i didnt!? that is why a colleague of yours Mark Rickenburg (hopefully he will forgive me for not remembering his name exactly) directed me to WICD to enable wireless!?
thanks
John

Lol, i guess WiCd fixed it. Sometimes when you install a package it draws in extra programs that it depends on in order to work but those dependencies get picked up on by other programs that can use them (although they don't necessarily depend on them). For example an instant messenger program will work fine on its own as a text based communication route but once you add "cheese" then you'll suddenly find the webcam 'magically' works in the IM too. I would guess that Mark knew WiCd would set setting s and draw in the right libraries/programs for network manager to be able to work. The precise details takes a lot of specialist knowledge so i am quite glad to count Mark Rijckenberg,m Marcobra and many others in here as colleagues - i feel like i just make lucky guesses sometimes.

Sorry i can't really help there. i hope someone with more expertise can give a better answer.
God luck and regards from
Tom :)
