how to reinstall network-manager from Ubuntu ISO

Asked by armando rubke

Twice in a year the installed network-manager stopped to work in my Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS leaving me without internet connection. I wonder if there is a way to prevent this to happen. My question is: Can I reinstall network-manager from the Ubuntu ISO file that I kept since the installation?, If that is possible, what will be the Terminal procedure without internet connection available to do it? Once I get the internet access again I will be able to update it.

Thank for your support.

More details: I tried almost all procedures recommended to regain access to the internet... almost all of them, required an active connection, or a "friend" computer connected, what I am using now. The procedures that I could follow without internet did not work for me.
The symptoms: Network manager in the settings menu is showing only manual setting HTTP proxy 8080, nothing else; in Terminal, $ nmtui shows my connections en edit mode, but not to connect; the same happens in $ nmcli con show.

To have a procedure to reinstall from Ubuntu ISO will be very helpful to regain access to the internet. If more details needed just ask.

Another potentially helpful command:

sudo apt install --reinstall --no-download libnm0 network-manager

If my command did not work, then let me start with an explanation.

There are a handful of different packages related to network-manager that depend on each other, and which have to be exactly the same version number.

On the initial Ubuntu 22.04 ISO there was version 1.36.4-2ubuntu1, but due to some bugs, theny meanwhile have been superseded by version 1.36.6-0ubuntu2. If you want to use the installer ISO file to reinstall the network-manager packages, then this is not trivial, because the ISO file most probably does not contain the same version as the one currently installed on your system.

It even seems to me that the ISO file does not contain installable *.deb packages for network-manager, but only single files spread among different directories.

My idea (which unfortunately did not work) was using the *.deb packages that may already be available in cache directories on your broken system. Apparently they aren't there any more.

In any case, I have some doubts that reinstalling the network-management packages will really help, because that is just replacing the files with identical files again.

I think that it would be better to try finding out, what there is happening on your system, what is causing that the network does no more work.

Let's start with diagostics:

1. What kind of computer (desktop, laptop, make and model) is it?
2. What kind of network connection do you intend to use - cable, WLAN, GSM-stick, ...?

To Manfred: Thank you very much for your clear explanation. In fact, that answers my question and I know now that even it is possible to reinstall the network-manager from the original ISO after lots of work, it really doesn't worth because it will not match the actual status of my system. OK, I will forget about it and look for another solution.

Now about your questions:
1: Laptop ASUS TUF GAMING, Intel Core i5-9300H
2: Wifi, from home router provided by local cable company.

I think the way to go now will be uninstalling whatever network-manager (or its remains) is still in my system and installing another from a package, Easy to say, but which, and how. Keeping the package in a safe place will be a quick restore help if anything happens again.

1. Do you have the possibility to connect the laptop to the router via a LAN cable? Maybe that offers a temporary connection that can be used to repair the WLAN connection.

2. Execute the command
sudo lshw -C network
and check the output (no need to retype it in full).

How many network devices are listed?
Can you identify one of them as the WLAN device?
What is shown for its type and manufacturer?
Is there somewhere the string "driver=", and what is shown there?
Is there an IP address shown in the output?

Unfortunately no. The result is always the same as shown, I tried with several cables, just in case.

May I ask you if the 01-network-manager-all.yaml is the adequate for my laptop?
A big doubt is growing in my mind.

Although I understand that using the Ubuntu ISO to solve a network problem is worthless, I am still unable to access the Internet, so I continue to look for solutions. Maybe I have to ask another question, like:

Is it possible to make a package that gives at least a minimun access, like through Ethernet cable, just to be able to get the resources needed to solve this kind of problem. I say this, because I tried to install the network manager package saving it into /var/cache/apt/archives/ but the apt try to go anyway to the internet to look for the package. When I succesfully made the apt to fetch the downloaded package, it still tried to acces the internet looking for the dependecies. Obviously it ends with errors all the time.

My last but one alternative is to reinstall Ubuntu itself, and the very last, that I don't want to take, is returning to Windows.

I accept any suggestion that doesn't talk about me needing to access the Internet in the first place, as most the answers I have checked do.

The key problem is that we still do not know, why your internet connection fails.

For collecting diagnostic information, the easiest way is using a cable connection and running the WLAN troubleshooting procedure.

For your attempt to copy the network manager deb file to /var/cache/apt/archives/:
The command that I gave earlier (sudo apt install --reinstall --no-download libnm0 network-manager) is supposed not to look at the internet for updates. Which command did you try?

If you are sure that you have the correct deb files already downloaded, then you can install them with dpkg and not with apt.

The commands to be executed have to be something like
cd /var/cache/apt/archives/
sudo dpkg -i libnm0_1.36.6-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb network-manager_1.36.6-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

Still I doubt that the problem can be solved by reinstalling the software. I much more believe that there is something wrong in your configuration.
There are several reports on the web where people complain that networking failed because of certain vpn solutions that they installed. From your output I assume that you have ProtonVPN installed. Have you tried disabling it?

In your comment #14 you wrote something about "wrong package". What exactly do you think that you did wrong?

Good news and also concerning news.

I am running full internet in my laptop. How? I restored several times with TimeShift until found a 3 month old that made the miracle of starting with internet on! Of course I lost a lot of programs installed after that date, even old ones like Thunderbird that I had to reinstall.

The concerning news is that I copy/paste your
cd /var/cache/apt/archives/
sudo dpkg -i libnm0_1.36.6-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb network-manager_1.36.6-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb
to Text Editor (and now into this comment) with no problem. BUT when I try to do the same thing in LibreOffice Writer the paste gave me
cd /var/cache/
sudo dpkg -i libnm0_
And cannot even complete it writing myself! I can do copy/paste with any other text, but not with that couple of lines.
Does it mean that LibreOffice is contaminated?

Anyway, about the Internet thing:
Now I am having it running immediately before the problem happened, so the conditions to happen again are present somehow. How to prevent it? I am sure you now how to guide me into investigating the health of the situation.

The problem which you describe about copy/paste in LibreOffice Writer is inexplicable to me.
Eventually LibreOffice Writer interprets your data as part of a table.

The "standard" way of diagnostics for WLAN problems is connecting the system to the internet (with whatever means) and running https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure
If you now have network connection, then please execute the command in step 2 and paste all output into this question document. That information should come in handy in case of another failure in future.

I copy/paste the command in step 2 in the terminal, as you suggested.
It started to work showing several lines in the terminal... and suddenly it stopped with a message covering the terminal saying:
"
Configuring debian-security-support.
Limited security support for one or more packages
Unfortunately, it has been necessary to limit security support for some packages.
The following packages found on this system are affected by this:

* Source:binutils
"
After that, the message got stuck and I could not see the terminal writings anymore.
Maybe I should leave the terminal open for even more time, in spite of the message...
I am going to try again, if something else happens I will posted.

# This is a dynamic resolv.conf file for connecting local clients to the

# Run "resolvectl status" to see details about the uplink DNS servers

The only error that I see are the following, and they should not have any effect on the network functions:

Err:2 cdrom://Ubuntu 22.04 LTS _Jammy Jellyfish_ - Release amd64 (20220419) jammy Release
Err:8 https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/kritalime/ppa/ubuntu jammy InRelease
  403 Forbidden [IP: 185.125.190.52 443]
Err:11 https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/mc3man/mpv-tests/ubuntu jammy Release
  404 Not Found [IP: 185.125.190.52 443]

1. You have the installation DVD still enabled as a repository source, although you no longer have the installer DVD inserted.
2. The kritalime/ppa PPA is obsolete, see the first lines in https://launchpad.net/~kritalime
3. The mc3man/mpv-tests PPA does not contain any software for Ubuntu jammy and also has to be removed from your configuration.

Open a terminal window and execute the command
software-properties-gtk
On the different sheets inside that program search for the reference to kritalime, mc3man and the installer DVD and remove the tickmarks for them. For kritalime and mc3man you should even remove the whole entries.

ok, I'll do that.

Update on symptoms:
FreeOffice Word definitively not working as should, several tests shows that is taking symbols as commands (/,-).
Bluetooth: I found it on, but I don't use it. Turned it off but It turns on by it self,
Router: Suddenly one of the WiFi stop working, This is same symptom I had before the previous problem with network.
Shut down: After clicking the menu command, it says that there is a process still running(?) and asked me the pass to be sure to turn off the laptop. (how can I check which process is running?)
Turn on: several error messages (how to read them?)
Update on actions taken:
I blocked the internet in and out in the firewall.
I am not using LibreOffice until feeling secure of doing it.
I am not using Krita until is ok.
Router: I reset it and return to work.
I am using the laptop with WiFi off, using "friend" computer when necessary and possible. This is not to worsen the situation until finding a solution. Anyway I think I will still be able to restore the situation with Time Shifter as I did, if necessary.

First attempt:

$ software-properties-gtk

(software-properties-gtk:7128): Gtk-WARNING **: 11:10:13.730: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:1:2: Expected a valid selector

(software-properties-gtk:7128): Gtk-CRITICAL **: 11:10:32.270: gtk_box_gadget_distribute: assertion 'size >= 0' failed in GtkNotebook

(software-properties-gtk:7128): Gtk-CRITICAL **: 11:10:32.270: gtk_box_gadget_distribute: assertion 'size >= 0' failed in GtkNotebook

Second attempt (after removing tickmarks and removing whole entries)

$ software-properties-gtk

(software-properties-gtk:7860): Gtk-WARNING **: 11:19:00.154: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:1:2: Expected a valid selector

Result: the changes were accepted
-------------

NOTICE!

At 15:27, Saturday: attempt to connect to WiFi:
Surprise! No WiFi in Settings, Network shows only VPN and an empty Network proxy turned to manual (HTTP Proxy 8080, other proxies and host in 0, and in the ignore host: local host, 127.0.0.0/8, ::1)

So I returned back to the future!

If needed more information that requires internet access I can see if TimeShifter is still willing to returning me to early September, but I have the feeling that was a one time chance.

I feel the impulse to uninstall Kryta, which is experimental, I can always download later a stable Kryta.
What is the sequence of terminal commands to completely uninstall, remove and/or purge the installed program?
can I do it without internet?
Also, how I completely uninstall protonVPN? -- keep in mind that I have no access to the internet, for the time being.

Mon Nov 28:

1. I reset the BIOS of the laptop to see if there is any hardware problem.
2. The laptop restarted and I clicked the upper-right button to access the settings.
3. A message was displayed in the first line: "Wi-Fi Not Connected"
4. I clicked Settings.
5. A message showed: "Wi-Fi Connection disappeared" and the space for connections available said "Visible Networks" and a big empty space.
6. I clicked Network, on the side. Showed only VPN and the empty Network Proxy.

Light comment: Seems that something in the system is preventing the network manager to do its work.

7. I Checked the Router and it is working normally as the signals are coming to an old desktop, and also to cellphones, just as usual.
