upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 alpha 6 loose network settings

Asked by Myroslav

Today I tried to upgrade from 8.10 (was working smoothly) to 9.04 using upgrade manager and encountered two problems:

On restart grub bootloader gave me two kernel options 2.6.28-9-generic and 2.6.27-13-generic.

2.6.28-9-generic was the default and it took me all the way to my desktop and froze. I then tried 2.6.28-9-generic (recovery mode). The item MySQL data erver showed a FAIL notice.

I then tried 2.6.27-13-generic and was able to get a functioning desktop, but appear to have lost my wireless connection. I am using a D-Link Dl 624 router with an ethernet connection.

How do I get the 2.6.28-9-generic kernel working?

How do I get my wireless connection working.

I provided the wrong information above.

I want to be using a wired connection, I think. I have now, using 2.6.27-13-generic kernel, no internet connection. How do I configure the network connection with my router?

To help you better we need some info about your hardware.
So please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

uname -a
lspci
ifconfig -a

lspci is lower of LSPCI

copy and paste result here.

Thank you

Thanks Marcobra,

Below is what you asked for. I have no functioning internet on ubuntu.
I'm running XP on another drive. I had to write all this down and then
type it in. I would really like to be connected on ubuntu soon.

Thanks again,

MG

Hi, I had similar problem after upgrade to 9.04, my internet connection got lost, the problem was, that Jaunty clears network settings -> I had to manually set my IP adress & stuff in the NetworkManager. Try writing down your network settings from your WinXP (if you don't already know them) and use these settings in Ubuntu in NetworkManager.

Seems the eth0 don't have any assigned ip address so please connect your pc using a cable to your router and try to configure it...

Please using the tried 2.6.27-13-generic so you have a desktop and please right clicking on the top right desktop manager icons ( if you can see it ) to configure the wired connection.
Please first try using the DHCP option.
Then try to set a fixed ip to your ethernet wired network card.

If you are in dual boot mode you can see the lan ip using widows by accessing to the:
Start → Run then type: cmd and press enter, on the showed window type ipconfig and then press enter

The ip of your wired network card might be something like 192.168.1.xxx netmask 255.255.255.0

If you can get connected please simply perform a fully upgrade of your installed Jaunty open a terminal from menu:
Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then type

sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

if you are still in trouble with your lan please paste the value of the window ip value of your network card here...?

Then we can manually set, not using any network manager, ip value in Ubuntu using terminal.

Hope this helps
