Internet connection starts / stops short burst

Asked by gra_x2

Running Ubuntu 8.10 stand alone on a separate HD.
When I boot XP on the other HD the internet works fine.
It is running wired to an all in one Virgin Broadband home system.
When Ubuntu boots it connects to internet eth0 wired not a problem. Do so straight up on the install.
I can PING addresses fine.
If I try to use firefox it begins to download and stops immediately.
Reviewing the system monitor I get a ramp up and immediate ramp down of network activity. I get 50-80 kb at a time.
Toggling the refresh button drags a bit more in each time so it is working.
E-mail and updates do the same thing. Just can’t get any flow of data to sustain.
I am a novice to Ubuntu so I have not dug too far.
Any suggestions welcomed.

Please try to disable ipv6 (this are notes for Gnome so to open terminal you must go to different menu item in Kde)

Please use this official method to disable ipv6 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WebBrowsingSlowIPv6IPv4

In short, open Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type

sudo sh -c 'echo blacklist ipv6 >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local'

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

The above command appends a line to the local blacklist configuration. The file will be created if it does not exist.

To restart your computer, type:

sudo reboot

To increase Firefox speed try this little http://www.elart.it/mozilla/speedup.php

Then you can play also with:
your DNS servers address setup by change them and putting the OpenDns server
and/or try to find best MTU setting for your connection.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately no joy.
It is still doing exactly the same thing.

I had previously looked into disabling ipv6 and followed some forum advice on this and no joy.

It does not seem to make any difference what is trying to access the connection. It seems to let a little bit in and stop.

I can't help but think it is something in the connection. Looking at the top tool bar, the network stays connected and when I try to re-load firefox, it instantly jups and then, again, stops.

I am still looking for an answer on this if anyone has any ideas.

I am pretty new to Ubuntu so direct advice on how to directly change the DNS settings would be great.

My main cencern is that it is not like I can't connect to the internet. It links up fine. It's just that it only can send / receive really small amounts before stopping until I manually tell it to have another go.

If it was toally stuffed, at least I would ahve a point to work from.

Hi gra_x2,

You can try to edit your DNS settings, some help on this is offered here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/2248

or check the Ubuntuforums (this is an archive link, you can also try the current forums)
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-35382.html

It states:

What is set in the /etc/resolv.conf file?

DSL routers sometimes have a caching nameserver, so you can set the "nameserver" to be the router IP e.g.

nameserver 192.168.0.1

Assuming the router is 192.168.0.1.

Otherwise, you need real nameservers in there - from Bell probably (who should have told you their addresses).

Perhaps any of these answers solve your problem! If not, try again here and/or on the Ubuntuforums

Thanks for the advice. I tried a lot of the suggestions in the links and various IP settings. All of them worked in exactly the same way.

Lets in a little bit at a time and then stops.

Really weird. It starts to load and then firefox is stuck in a "wating for......" mode indefinately.

So I can get a connection no worries, just no flow.

I have reported your problem as a bug:

#354743: Ubuntu 8.10 connects with internet but ramp down on network activity while browsing or emailing

So maybe they can take a look in and solve your problem!

Since a few years I run my ubuntu on a small harddisk of 80gb and my data on a larger harddisk. So I am able to reinstall ubuntu when something goes wrong. Only bad part is: lose of system settings. Maybe that is a solution for you?

Hello again. I was not that far into Ubunto that starting again was a big deal.

I loaded Kubuntu this time just to have a look at what that was like.

Unfortunately it was doing exactly the same thing.
