After upgrading to 8.10 cannot connect on Internet

Asked by alexie on 2009-03-10

I have almost the same problem, but even though i tried everything you wrote on this page (and many other) nothing seems to solve my problem.
I have upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 and lost my internet connection. When I connect through Windows everythings fine. I'm on DSL using LAN cable.

Under network devices two are listed:
loopback interface
and ethernet interface, but under this there are no configurations.

There is an icon that I am on wired connection, Auto eth0, but again, under the configuration VPN there is no information.

Please please help me as soon as possible!

Thank you in advance!

ok, it appears that there is a problem; please follow instructions on

http://georgia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1022411

if you have problems following the above just let us know.

first I would try though system-->admin-->hardware drivers and see what output you;re getting.

3) Remove the r8169 module
-> rmmod r8169
-> mv /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/r8169.ko ~/r8169.ko.backup
( the ` is a backtick, it is not an apostrophe or single quote )

i stopped here..... after this when i tried to got to step 4
can't open input file r8168-8.009.00.tar.bz2: no such file or directory......

alexie (alexandra-stojkov) said : #7

Please check If the MUT of wired interface is set to 64
If it is, and need to reset it to default value: 1500

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0f:b0:c0:ad:1b
          inet6 addr: fe80::20f:b0ff:fec0:ad1b/64 Scope:Link
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:64 Metric:1
          RX packets:23 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:18 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:5605 (5.6 KB) TX bytes:3234 (3.2 KB)
          Interrupt:16

Please test this:
# sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu 1500
# dhclient eth0

If it is ok, that's mean eth0 can receive ip address, you need to do one more task:

remove "interface-mtu" in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf file to make sure dhclient program will not request MTU to be set to 64 again.
