Is it possible to connect with the internet using dial-up and Ubuntu 8.10?

Asked by Robert Lynn

I have spent the last three weeks trying to connect to the internet using Ubuntu 8.10. I have bought a Trendnet TFM-560X serial modem, five books on linux or Ubuntu, and downloaded many many pages on how to set up modems in Linux. The instructions seem clear enough but nothing ever works. I've tried using the "Networking option" under "Administration" but there is no "Networking option, the next step is to select the "modem connection option and click on properties" under Network settings. There is no "Modem connection" under "Network settings". Very frustrating.

I've tried wvdial and everything seems to go good but then in the end there is no pppd. I've tried pppconfig but that doesn't produce much either.

This is guaranteed to drive away potential Linux users who only have access to dial-up. I tried out the LiveCd at my brother's place who has high-speed available and it instant plug and play. I'll never buy another Windows machine and I'm almost ready to give up on this and buy a Mac.

I will be very appreciative of any help that is forthcoming as I am at my wits end.

Thanks, Bob

Can you "see" the modem in the system ever?
I've just wondering about that you should install the modem, before trying configure it.
So do you have drivers for linux for this tool?

nhasian: Here's the results. I have run pppconfig several times and and filled in the screens but it never works.

bob@bob-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp
[sudo] password for bob:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package gnome-ppp
bob@bob-desktop:~$

bazsik: I can't see a modem in System and there were no linux drivers included and it says Linux is a supported OS. Reviews I read said that it worked right out of the box. Here's what I got running wvdial:

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot set information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0

--> Modem initialized.

login:

--> Sending: <email address hidden>
<email address hidden>
Password:
--> Looks like a password prompt.
--> Sending: (password)

and then:

--> Check permissions, or specify a "PPPD Path" option in wvdial.conf.
--> Don't know what to do! Starting pppd and hoping for the best.
--> Unable to run /usr/sbin/pppd.

And finally after the above filled the screen:

--> pipe failed: Too many open files

Thanks for your help guys but I'm still dazed and confused.

juancarlospaco: We made some progress. I installed gnome-ppp_0.3.23-1 and completed the setup in the GUI. Gnome PPP is listed under "Internet". I ran it and it dialed. Here is the Log:

I'll show wvdialconf results:

Further to the last message:

After the line:

"KMLPBC01-TNET12",

a small window titled "Connecting" opens with the message "Waiting prompt" below. Then the error messages ran on until they quit.

What is this missing prompt?

Thanks again.

juancarlospaco: Thanks, gnome-ppp_0.3.23-1 did the job. My last problem was that I had selected 115200 as per instructions that I had downloaded or read in a book. Selecting 56700 made the connection work.

Thanks again,

Bob
