wireless is disabled by hardware switch? I am using ubuntu 12.04? How do I solve it?

Precise is only supported til April next year. Why such an old release? I suggest you wipe the install off and do a clean install of Xenial. Xenial is the latest release of Ubuntu and will be supported until April 2021.
