Can't connect to Wifi with BCM4321 in Natty 11.04

Asked by David Carr

Internal WiFi card (BCM4321 chip) won't connect. I've enabled the drivers using Additional Drivers in System Settings with no change. Also tried another fix that involved enabling B43 drivers but that didn't work either. Wired Ethernet works fine - I've also downloaded the latest system updates.

Below is the output from the diagnostic command given on this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure.

It looks like you can successfully scan the wireless access point, so I'd say the driver setup is OK. Connecting to your accesspoint requires you to select the correct security protocol, and supply the correct key, (and if your accesspoint is not broadcasting, go to the network-manager (pie shape pile of arcs or outline) and select "connect to hidden network", and also supply the ESSID. I have heard tell of problems connecting to eth1 with network-manager, but have no direct experience with that. Suggestions that wicd seems to work better for eth1 I have also heard, but again, no direct experience with that, since network-manager works for me.

You were right: the laptop was connecting but wasn't authenticating. It turns out that the router was set for a 64/40-bit WEP key and a 64-bit key was in use. The Ubuntu selection was 128/40-bit, hence a mismatch. I changed the router to a 128-bit key and it works!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
