About a year ago I noticed a particular icon in the drop-down list of wifi network next to some but not all networks. I still haven't figured out what it stands for. Do you know?

i went to google, typed "wireless icons" and clicked on two links. the first link was misleading and it was for some stock pholographs which was selling between $199US to $499US each, depending on the resolution you want. the second link had a picture of that icon. well, your guess is as good as mine what that icon means.

This icon means the network is an ad-hoc wireless network -- e.g. it's another system advertising a peer-to-peer rather than infrastructure-based Wi-Fi network. Best guess in this kind of state is usually that it will not let you access the internet, unless you really know who made it, why, and you know the risks :)
