PPTP doesnt load ppp_mppe kernel module

Asked by James McArthur

Ubuntu 10.04 (Fresh Install), Network Manager Applet 0.8. When creating a new VPN connection that needed PPTP I found that the kernel module 'ppp_mppe' wasn't being loaded. This meant that VPN connection never worked and the only error messages appearing in the syslog were 'Timeout waiting for LCP Config requests'.

I believe that when the user asks for a MSCHAP/v2 and Point-to-Point encryption (MPPE) then network manager should load that kernel module if it isn't already loaded.

if you run:

sudo modprobe ppp_mppe

Then try, is it ok?

Yep, I had to do that to make the connection come up successfully.
