If you press ALT+F2 then run:

nm-applet

does it appear?

You don't need the applet running to get connected. It's only a GUI for the networking service, once you configure it the only thing nm-applet does is tell libnotify to disaply alerts when you connect and disconnect from a network. If it isn't running you will still get connected, you just won't be told about it
