Installed 10.10 on notebook, but I cannot see any icons anywhere.

Asked by Dan Mouw

I installed 10.10 on my old dell laptop. It installed, but there are no icons. If I cursor over them, a blank box pops up. If I click on it it opens the program/folder that should be there. Also the top right "start" menu does not show. All the programs open and operate fine, but I can't see what I'm operating till it's open.

It has Pentium M 735 - 1.7 GHz, 2MB L2 cache
14-inch XGA (1024x768) TFT Display
64 MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
512x1 MB RAM
80 GB, 5400 RPM hard drive
CD-RW/DVD-ROM
Intel PRO Wireless 2200BG... so no it doesn't have enough RAM.

Is there a way to get around this problem?

The RAM is probably the culprit here. Better if you could get your hands on another 512 MB module. Or consider Lubuntu, a light weight fork of Ubuntu.
