Cannot locate the 'System' menu

Asked by Fahad Mahmud

I am new to Linux and have installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Version. In the desktop I don't see any menu at the top left of the screen. Moreover I cannot run any application using Alt+F2 (not at all). I cannot run any File Explorer.

I am completely new to Ubuntu. Please somebody help me . . .

If you click the folder icon in Unity, you should see your files.

The default netbook mode uses a simplified interface, known as "unity". There is an option to switch back to the more complex interface at startup, (after you enter your user name change the session type), if you are still having troubles.

@mycae: Thanx a lot . . . :)

During the Installation I chose Autometic LogOn and there was no option for session type. Before that when I tested ubuntu from USB flash drive it loaded its default Netbook session. For this I had no idea that there are other session types. But when I browsed the default help system (after installing on Hard drive) and the Ubuntu manual "Getting started with Ubuntu 10.04", I was informed that there should be a panel at the top of the desktop where I should find 'Application' , 'Places' & others menu. Thats why I was worried . . .

Now I am using the Desktop mode and the default panels are present. I am getting to like Ubuntu :-)

Thanks again and Happy New Year . . . :-)

I apologize I did not mean to be a source for answers about Ubuntu ...It is
actually I that needs help for I am brand new to this system and have very
little skill sets when it comes to knowing my way around....I do apologize,
I can assure you though that the level of knowledge and help that I have
received amongst the Open Source / Launch Pad and Overall Ubuntu help
experience has been more than adequate, in fact down right helpful...so I AM
SURE SOMEONE WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS PROPERLY AND BEST OF LUCK!

Respectfully,

Sebastian Powell
