Can't get my wifi to work on Asus Eee PC 1015PEM netbook with installed Ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition

Asked by Carlos Acevedo

   Hello All,

I just purchase a new Asus Eee PC 1015PEM netbook and installed Ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition. I have search google and I'm glad that I'm not the only one having problems with there WIFI and this brand of netbook.

Some of the steps I have taken so far are...

"go to realtek's website for driver support (download section)
-Choose "communications network ICs>wireless lan ICs>WLAN NIC> then choose b/g/n single chip> software > now choose "RTL8192SE"
-(For simplicity just download it to "Downloads" folder)
-go to the folder, click "Extract Here" (I renamed the extracted folder as "RTL8192""
-Open up the application "terminal"

type the following in terminal:
sudo su
cd Downloads |note that the letter the folder begins w/ a capital D|
cd RTL8192SE
make
make install
reboot gk (this will reboot the computer)

then press Fn + F2 and watch for the wifi light to light up. All done ^^ ""

One thing to note FN+F2 doesn't seem to do anything. My WIFI is on, but it's not being pick up by ubuntu.

I have also tried the method posted by Rick "Try installing the compat-wireless Linux modules (backported versions) using these 2 commands:" still can't get the wifi to work.

Here is a copy of my terminal log

One more thing to mention. Under hardware driver I have Broadcom STA wireless drivers listed and installed. At the bottom of the screen the window states "The driver is currently active, but not in use."

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It uses the broadcom STA driver, You can install it using the ethernet port and also get fully updated

How would I go back installing it from the ethernet port? I went into the network screen and my ethernet port is working fine, but under wireless I have nothing listed.

That page didn't help. I did see on the comments that Kevin is having the same problem but no new comments yet.

"I’ve actived the new driver, and reboot, but something unexpected, the new driver is enabled, but not in use. And I couldn’t find wireless network"

@Carlos, what do you see exactly when going to System > Administration > Hardware drivers ?

You should be able to choose the STA driver and enable it. If you have activated b43, please disable it and enable STA.

If you don't see STA in your choices please do:

From the GUI:
Package Manager (System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager). Click the Reload button in the upper left corner of Synaptic to refresh your index then search for and reinstall the package named bcmwl-kernel-source.

From the shell:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install bcmwl-kernel-source

In either GUI or text case, after reinstalling, reboot your machine.

Now go back to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers and you should see the driver enabled and working.

The above instructions come from:
http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt
Also quoted and tested/working here:

Under Hardware Driver I see the following...

http://picasaweb.google.com/jca2022/DropBox?authkey=Gv1sRgCI7Pxo_At8S7qgE&pli=1&gsessionid=7jbcTB-voHof31-lbw6sbQ#5525885593216269874

So I removed the driver and tried installing it from the shell. Went into the Hardware drivers and I have the same problem, driver is enabled, but not in use.

Going to try and reinstall Ubuntu see if that helps.

Finally got the wifi working. I reinstalled Unbuntu and as soon as the OS loaded up I installed the drivers with the directions given by Fabián. Not sure why I couldn't get it to work previously, but I'm up and running now.

Thanks All!
