I'd log a bug, you could use devilspie and gdevilspie (devilspie is a cli app but there is a python app on google-code to make life easier) to tell every app to maximize when they first load.

Maxamizeing doesn't help. I still get booted back to the home/favorite screen.

this is a fresh install. only one user. I'll create a secound. or try to. its difficult since windows won't stay open.

Ummm... are you sure none of the keys are stuck? It may so happen that some shortcut to return you to the desktop is kicking in (things like that have happened to me before) - you could check if the behavior is the same when booting with the Live CD

You can always press CTRL+ALT+F1 and drop to command line and do it there :)

even after a new login.. and no sticky keys.. its like the netbook ui thing trys to force its way to the front no matter what is open.

Ok so now we know its not a config problem as it is affecting all users. If you use the CTRL+ALT+F1 screen, can you update with:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

It may help

Can you help with this problem?
