Ubuntu-Netbook 10.04 in trial mode

Asked by m-v-p

I know this is not a question as such, but I have come across a problem and I don't know where else to report it.
I am running Ubuntu-Netbook 10.04 from a memstick in it's trial mode. The first time, I started setting my keyboard (Belgium), time format, .... However, when I shut down my netbook and reboot it, every time all of those settings are gone and it's back to default. This is very annoying, especially the keyboard setting. I am not accustomed to a US layout. I hope this problem will not occur when I install Ubuntu-Netbook 10.04 on the netbook. It would be nice towards non-US users to store their settings on the memstick.

Greetings

You mention 'trial'; you are running the 'Live' CD of Ubuntu on a USB stick. There are no trials and restrictions with Ubuntu.

What happens with your case is that you are running the Live system every time you boot, so no changes are saved. That's how it's designed.

You have a few options; one is to use a second USB stick and create a Startup Disk on this second USB stick. When you create a startup disk, you have the option to specify space so that your changes are stored there.
From the Live system, see System/Administration/Make a Startup disk.

Well, I wrote "trial" because the welcome screen mentions "You can try Ubuntu-Netbook ...."
However, in my opinion, the "live" version on the USB stick would be more user friendly if it had the possibility to save those settings itself - if at all feasible of course and if it's not, to display a warning that settings will be lost when the system shuts down.
This being said, I won't be needing a start-up disk as meanwhile I have already fully installed Ubuntu on my netbook. Thanks for your reply.

To have your settings saved, you need to select Persistence when you installed ubuntu on your usb stick. You only need to set it to the minimum of 1 gig, unless you make extensive changes to the programs and the desktop.
