network speed monitoring

Asked by Tom

Ok, my network administrator has just installed a brand new switch that's meant to run a lot faster than the old one but i don't know what package would be best to use to see how fast my connection to his file-sharing computer is. I'm kinda at the limit of my understand in this area so i'm probably not making sense. Package suggestions for gui ones or command line suggestions would be good. Thanks, Tom :)

Net-tools had mii-tool in it that gave a great answer when i did

sudo mii-tool

it turns out that i'm getting stuff faster than any one else on the network because they're all stuck in Windows. Weirdly i'm able to get stuff faster than the server can hand it out although this machine is 'far inferior' lol
