ndiswrapper not working

Asked by Adarsh Ravishankar on 2010-06-21

Hi,

In order to connect to my wireless internet, I installed ndiswrapper as said in the intructions in the following link:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Intel_4965_AGN_WiFi_Driver/Fiesty

Except I installed the newer version of ndiswrapper.

I am at the last step, where I type:

sudo modprobe ndiswrapper

when I type that, I get:

WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper, it will be ignored in a future release.

The computer detects my network card (intel agn 5300), and it says that the driver is installed, but I can't run "sudo modprobe ndiswrapper."

BTW I am new to Linux.

Thanks

Hi,

Please first connect the wired network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'ound|irmware|eth|ath|wl|ipw|b43|witch|ndiswrapper'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of PC (if known) that you are using.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks,

Can you please test wireless while in the Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD session (by booting Ubuntu 10.04 from CD or from USB stick)?

If wireless works during the Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD session, then reinstall Ubuntu from the LiveCD.

If wireless does NOT work during the Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD session, then please resend us the output of the following commands while in the LiveCD session and while using a working WIRED network connection:

sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'ound|irmware|eth|ath|wl|ipw|b43|witch|ndiswrapper'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Mark,

I installed Ubuntu through Wubi. If it helps, when Ubuntu was making final configurations after installing, the wifi card was working (the wifi light was on in my laptop). After it was done making the final configurations and after it restarted, the wifi card stopped working (the wifi light was off).

Thanks,
Adarsh

There are currently too many wireless configuration issues with your current Ubuntu 10.04 install : mixing gutsy and lucid repositories in the sources.list file; using wrong drivers for wireless card, incorrect parameters in the /etc/network/interfaces file; conflict between ndiswrapper and iwlagn wireless drivers; wireless card disabled by incorrect configuration file parameters, by a hardware switch or by incorrect BIOS settings for wireless; following a wireless procedure that is 2 years old and does not apply to Ubuntu 10.04, etc....

That is why I am asking for the output when using the 10.04 LiveCD session.

It is currently impossible to deduct how the original wireless configuration looked like right after installing Ubuntu 10.04 and without changing wireless settings .

I can troubleshoot a clean installation of Ubuntu, but not a broken one.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Adarsh Ravishankar for more information if necessary.
