Trying to install divx converter and cannot run

Asked by Starr

First time Linux user trying to play a family movie. Cannot find a divx /xvid plug-in to work. Tried downloading Videoconverter and divx installer. With the results being :
Archive: /home/drew/Downloads/DivXInstaller.exe
[/home/drew/Downloads/DivXInstaller.exe]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /home/drew/Downloads/DivXInstaller.exe or
/home/drew/Downloads/DivXInstaller.exe.zip, and cannot find /home/drew/Downloads/DivXInstaller.exe.ZIP, period.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thak you and have a happy new year.

That is a windows app, you are using Linux, not windows.

You can also use one of the multitude of converters for Linux. You can use mencoder, ffmpeg, handbrake or winff to name just a few

They can convert the videos and will run natively so will be faster than any windows app.

you need a deb extension codec file and try installing VLC Media player...by default Music player works fine for all popular free formats.
for mp3 playback you need to install this plugin..... gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
you can install either through synaptic package manager...search this plugin and then tick install..apply
or through terminal just type
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
it will download and install automatically.
