Can't make VLC my default media player

Asked by lasersail

Movie player is currently my default media player...some of the windows operating system file formats (MP3 & windows media stuff) are not supported. I have installed VLC and like it a lot. How can I make it so it is my default media player. I have tried to remove movie player and it says I can't because of a shared file??

Hello,

right click on the file ->properties ->open with->select VLC and the all files with the same prefix will now open with VLC.

Dude there are bunches of different extensions. Gnome already has something like a default app for Email and for Web. Nothing for video player?

Sure we can hunting and pecking, but one point of simplicity is best.

Thanks to all for your assistance. I solved the problem by going into proporties and saying open with...
Ubuntu actually lets you change proporties instead of just looking at them....cool

Thanks again problem solved

This still doesn't truly answer the question. In Windows (I'm new to Linux) when I install VLC I'm given the option to set all supported extensions to open in VLC. I want to do something similar with Ubuntu and it doesn't seem possible. What am I missing? Choosing Open With... for each file type is painful.
