obtaining windows archives after instalation

Asked by Vitor

I've just installed the complete version of Ubuntu. I substituted the Windows XP for the Ubuntu. Is there any way I can recover the documents I had before the instalation (files, pics, music etc.)? Or are they lost because I didn't backuped them?
Thanks

If you chose to install Ubuntu over the Windows partition and confirmed the data deletion warning, then yes they are gone.

If you installed it to a different drive or partition then it should show up in the Places menu.

That was not exactly what I wished to hear, but it seems to be sad but true. Thanks a lot.

You might have some success by using magicrescue, but I wouldn't expect much of it. I have never used the program though, so you'll have to read the manual yourself or ask someone else.

If you decide to try it, be sure to use another disk for the output (otherwise you will be writing your recovered files over pieces of disk that may contain more files). Most chance to recover anything is when you minimize writing to the disk (maybe you can use magicrescue from the liveCD or install Ubuntu on another disk and run it from there).
