when I start up my new computer with a dule boot setup by our it dept --- it now comes up with a message "grub missing W ---for a few days it worked fine. but when Office 97 was installed, and i rebooted the system -- it came up with the above message

Part of your boot sector was overwritten by the Office 97 installer... If you're using Office 97, you would have been better off with OpenOffice.org on windows.

anyway, you're going to have to reinstall grub. You can use your ubuntu install CD to do that, or you can just reinstall Linux if that's easier for you and you have no files on Linux yet that you care about.

I normally keep my /home directory on a separate partition to make Linux upgrades and distro switches a lot less painful.
