sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

will give you a lot of codecs

You have to activate the repositories Universe y Multiverse, and the install the following plugins from a terminal.
    * gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
    * gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse
    * gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
    * gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
    * gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
    * gstreamer0.10-pitfdll
