How do I make a CD/DVD disc playable on standard auto or household players

Asked by Andy

I downloaded a PBS radio program and used CD/DVD Creator (in Ubuntu 8.04) to put it on a CD. But the CD will not play in a regular CD player. How do I make a disc playable on standard auto or household players?

Does your regular CD player support audio format witch you downloaded and burned on CD?If not convert to format witch is supported in your regular CD player.

Thanks. The down load Properties says Type: MP# audio and MIME type: audio/mpeg. I have no idea how to change the format, or what to change it to. I want to share it with a friend and would like to be able to stick it in any CD player and have it work.

That should say:

Thanks. The down load Properties says Type: MP3 audio and MIME type: audio/mpeg. I have no idea how to change the format, or what to change it to. I want to share it with a friend and would like to be able to stick it in any CD player and have it work.

Most standard CD players use only CDR format and must have wave files (.wav extension) to play. Sounds like you have all the files needed to play (and probably convert), so just set up to save it to cd as a wave file. Could probably help more if we knew what you are using to record the info to CD (i.e. - more specific instructions), but betting you can do it knowing that much. If not, check back in and let us know.

I'm just using the "CD/DVD Creator" that came with Umbutu 8.04. I went and looked, but I couldn't find a way to change the format. I have the file on my Desktop ("radiolab_podcast603 parasites. mp3"), but there doesn't seem to be a save as feature, either as a right click or in the CD/DVD Creator.

Can you listen downloaded music in your comp? Does your CD player support mp3 format? If not convert to the supported format (probably wav but check just in case) with soundconverter(it is in synaptic). You can also do it as described in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=731932&highlight=audio+convert #7.

I installed the converter and it works fine. I converter the mp3 file to wav with no problem, except the one-hour radio program became too large to fit on a CD, so I had to make a DVD. That played back fine on the computer, but, of course, wouldn't work on the old CD player. Also, it wouldn't work on my new DVD/VCR recorder. However, I discovered that the original mp3 CD played on that machine.

I conclude that it is time to learn a bit about formats, etc.

Thanks to all.
