If you have problems installing, I advice you to download the Alternate
installation version from http://www.releases.ubuntu.com

Hi :)

It's good to hear the LiveCd is working
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Please get to a command-line
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal#Starting%20a%20Terminal
and type in

free -m

sudo fdisk -l

where " -l" is a lower-case " -L". Then just copy&paste the output of those into here so we can try to work out what might have gone wrong.

Since the LiveCd works it suggests that a normal standard install should also work. It also suggests that your machine is over the min.spec. of 800MHz cpu and 512Mb ram. Given that you are using the whole drive then that's got to be more than 15Gb so lets just have a look and see if Windows left us some nice partitioning problems that we can tidy up easily. (Most likely reason for the problem)

Don't worry about feeling dumb. That's the way microsquish set things up. It's a brand new OS to you and it wasn't pre-installed by a team of experts - so just don't expect to know everything straight away. You soon will know a heck of a lot even if you don't try. Starting with linux is a smart move and you'll soon be fine with it but it might take a couple of weeks before everything settles down to normal usage.

You would be amazed how little time most of the experts in here have been using linux and yet have learned a huge amount more than they would have done in Windows in 10x that long. There are a few that have been around for many years or been with other linux OSs before Ubuntu of course.

Here's a quick look-up guide that you might find useful later
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
