Please read the following links to learn how to find out which application or game that the .sav file belongs to:

http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/sav
http://filext.com/file-extension/sav
http://filext.com/faq/research_file_type.php

"Various programs use this extension; too many to list individually. Take clues from the location of the file as a possible pointer to exactly which program is producing the file. The file's date and time can also help if you know which programs you were running when the file was written."

But your question is more a Windows question than an Ubuntu question. This website is dedicated to answering Ubuntu related questions.

It is likely that you can only open the .sav file in a Windows application or game, not in Ubuntu

Once upon a time ;-) I worked on XP too. The only files with an extension *.sav there were those of the game Civilization.

Are you sure those *.sav files are text files? The default text viewres/editors in Ubuntu don't open files with a binary content but open all the text files regardless of their name or extension. So this tells me you are trying to open not a text file(s) and you probably don't need it.

many thanks,

(i am not sure whether i could write my name here or not, hence i am not putting my name).
