i have just installed ubuntu & would like to know how to get my programmes from wondows to ubuntu

 I have jost downloaded and installed ubuntu onto my windows xp home machine and would like to know if it is possible to bring my faverite programmes from windows xp to ubuntu and is so could you please tell me how to do it

Thanks for your question Mr. Brown and welcome to the ubuntu community.

As you might experienced, there are a lot of quite good alternatives to windows software. Running Windows software on Ubuntu is quite discouraged. There's an application called "Wine" which macuto already mentioned which is able to run some windows applications. I can't stress *some applications* hard enough.

In my opinion, you won't be satisfied with using wine.

So I'd like to encourage you to tell us the names of your prefered software, so we will be able to provide proper alternatives on Ubuntu.

i am a graphic designer. therefore i used the adobe suit applications for window and coreldraw. i want to run them in ubuntu. i have no knowledge in ubuntu. all that i have been able to do is to have successfully installed ubuntu. i now want to have my windows based programmes running on it

Alright so first: windows program don't run on Ubuntu, especially Adobe
ones. You can use wine [1] to get those programs working but there are
better open source alternatives to those proprietary programs. Just list
out the programs you mostly use and I'll post back a list of the open
source alternatives :)
