I am using Ubuntu 7.10 and wish to install version 9. I have downloaded the new version and do not know what command to use to install.

According to the Ubuntu website
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes

The proper way is to download 8.04, and 8.10. Upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04. Upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10. Then upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04.

I know, that sounds like a pain but, the only other suggestion on the website is to do a data backup, then a clean install of 9.04, then a data restore. Not much better in my book but, it seems no other way is officially supported.

I have downloaded 8.04 and tried to write to disc, will not work. Is there a command to install?

To upgrade to 9.04, you do not need to download any discs. Press Alt+F2 , and enter "update-manager -d" at the prompt. Then you will be asked to confirm you are upgrading to 8.04. Wait for the installation process to finish, then repeat twice more.
