Nautilus crash disables everything on desktop, including background that is replaced with a black screen. Restart does not help

Asked by Nintendofreak

Binary package hint: nautilus

The entire desktop is gone. I checked, and the files are still there, but I cannot see them on the desktop. My background has been replaced with a entirely black screen. The taskbar is still there, so I am still able to launch programs, but not create shortcuts. Rebooting does not fix this.

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 beta

Version of nautilus: 1:2.26.1-0ubuntu1

Update: After four reboots my background returned, but not the files.

During an update nautilus froze my system. I was not able to bring up terminal to try and get out of it. I ended up rebooting after which I got the following message:

Kernel panic not syncing VFS: Unable to mount root FS on unknown Lock(0,0)

Now I am trying to find a way to recover without having to delete and re-install Ubuntu which of course wipes everything out I currently have.

Does anyone have suggestions for recovery on this?
