Search Problems

Asked by Roger Davis

Using file browser in 7.04, I'm trying to search out all files on the entire hard drive of a certain name or containing a word or phrase.

But when I enter it, all the files aren't found. I'm following the instructions in help EXACTLY. Using * only makes it worse.

It seems (maybe?) that it's not looking at the entire hard drive. I'm not restricting the search in any way that I can discern.

How can I make it search everywhere and find all files? Or will it simply not do this?

Also, it doesn't show me where the few files it will find are located. How do I display this?

Thanks for your question, if you want you can use beagle.

A desktop search util for indexing and searching user's data. At the moment,
it can index filesystems, Gaim logs, Evolution mail and data, RSS and other.

Beagle webpage is at http://www.gnome.org/projects/beagle/

to install it:

$: sudo apt-get install beagle

Thanks

I would rather use the file manager to do this, as well to learn what it is that I'm doing wrong.

The file-browser actually uses Beagle to search your data. By default, Beagle only indexes everything in your home directory. If you want to tell it to index something else, you can add it in ‘System → Preferences → Search & Indexing’.

Alternately if you want to just search for a filename on the drive you could use the terminal:
$ find /path/to/drive -iname "*text*"

George, this isn't helping. System -> Preferences does not have a Search & Indexing option in Ubuntu 7.04. I have the same issue as Roger - this is such a basic requirement - can anyone help us do subdirectory-inclusive searches in Ubuntu?

Can you help with this problem?
