How to eliminate duplicate entries in open with menu

Asked by Blue_Bullet on 2009-02-17

How can I eliminate duplicate entries for 'the', The Hessling Editor, in the Open With menu in Nautilus? The word 'the' appears 3 times in the Open With menu and 5 times in the Open With Other Application menu. I use Gnome, Nautilus 2.24.1, Ubuntu 8.10. I would like just one selection. I do not want to remove the application just the duplicate entries.

Right click on properties of a file type with duplicates. On the open with tab highlight duplicates and select remove. That's the graphical way to do it. Smoke and mirrors in the code I guess. Solved it myself. THis forum is fairly unresponsive. Might be better not to have it.

Blue-

I've found Launchpad's "answers" feature to be very helpful. I bet it cuts down on unnecessary bug reports too.

I just found your answer here via Google. Thanks for posting it :]

Hi there,

I installed Ubuntu 16.04 and decided I wanted to try out Xubuntu so I followed this guide (apart from step 3). https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/alternative

After deciding I didn't want it, I went back to Unity with other steps I don't remember.

This left me with duplicate entries via Open with, although this is a workaround I'd rather it not happen and want this to be prevented in future. Can you look deeper into this issue?
