Asked by Mr. MInhaj

I use Ubuntu 8.10. I regularly update my ubuntu. I have the latest "important security update" according to my respiratory. for some days,i am facing a great problem. My multimedia files are in a 43 GB drive rather than "File system". When i go to my movie or vdo song collection in that 43 GB drive, my file browser crashes i.e. all of my open windows are closed automatically and in the in the bottom panel "Starting file browser" is shown but after some moments it also vanishes. This occurs frequently only when i go to my movie or vdo song directory. Pls help...

Is this an external plugged via usb hard-disk...?
Which filesystem is running on the 43 gigabytes partition... ?
Can you try to perform a partition check for errors using gparted...?

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(if the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo fdisk -l

Copy and paste result here.

Thank you

Hi all, am having a similar problem. For the last week or so I have been unable to view any of the folders in the home directory. When I attempt to open them a new window pops up momentarily and then disappears. A "starting file browser" tab opens up at the bottom and then disappears shortly after.

When I try and open nautilus from the terminal the same thing happens (starting file browser emblem in the bottom of the screen that disappears shortly after). Unfortunately there are no errors that are displayed.

I can still play all of the music on rythm box so all the files are still there, any ideas what I need to do?

Many thanks

Tom
