how to install downloaded fonts in ubuntu 8.10

I am new user of ubuntu 8.10. My son introduced it to me. Now he is not at home. I want to see a HINDI website but the fonts of computer do not help me to read the matter. I have downloaded fonts on my desktop. Please help me how to paste new fonts ubuntu 8.10 DESKTOP EDITION

You can run:
sudo apt-get install language-support-fonts-hi
to install necessary Hindi fonts in ubuntu.

To do this, go to Applications -> Terminal and type in the command above. you will, however, need the root password. if your son has not provided it for you, you can try creating a folder in the home directory (Places->Home Folder) called .fonts and placing the fonts in that folder. You must Enable “Show Hidden Files” option from Nautilus View menu first. Restart your computer and you should be good to go!
