Asked by Info

I am currently trying to install Ubutu and am at the partition screen, what do I select now?
I have a 80GB drive which I partitioned into two 40GB drives. (One drive is C: the other D:)
I have windowsXP on the C: and would like to install Ubuntu on the D:

I am lost here as not sure where to click or what to do?
I click manually edit but then what?

Cheers

You can't put ubuntu on your "D" drive. You need a chunk of utterly blank unpartitioned space for Ubuntu to go in. You need to remove the "D" drive (assuming there is nothing in it) and let the ubuntu partitioning tool create the partitions it needs in that blank space.

Hey thanks for responding.

Not sure what you mean as I am a serious noob to this Ubuntu.
How do I remove the D:?

Thanks for the question.

The best thing is probably to delete the second partition to create space for the automatic pratitioning. You can do that in the application that pops up called qtpart. If you save the partition table then and go back to the partitioning screen it will ask you if it should install it in the free space and you can choose that.

Here is also a screen cast that shows you through the process:

http://doc.ubuntu.com/screencasts/Installing_Ubuntu_with_Windows_Dual-Boot

Here are some more instructions about the partitioning:

https://help.ubuntu.com/6.10/ubuntu/installation-guide/i386/partitioning.html

I hope this helps

Ok just to add to this question.
I am using the CD I got in the mail and have formatted the D: drive in windows.
I have booted from the cd and get to the partition section.
That is where I am now...

Hope that makes sense?

As you are familiar with windows you could boot to windows and use Disk Administrator to remove the D drive.

Presumably the D: Drive is empty, right? Just formatted in Windows. Linux and therefore Ubuntu uses a different filesystem then Windows. Therefore the Ubuntu partition needs to be reformatted by the installer anyway. Also, it is preferable for Ubuntu that there is also a separate partition for the swapspace. Therefore the installer actually creates 2 partitions one for the filesystem and one for the swap. That is why I suggested to delete the D: partition (which you should only do if it is indeed empty), and then let the installer automatically create the necessary partitions.

If you are in the installer in the manual partitioning part, there is a second window that is opened. That application is called qtpart and allows you to modify your partition table.

I hope this helps

Just to make a note on that partition screen, I am actually looking at the SELECT A DISK section right now.

When you first enter the partitioning part, doesn't it give you an option to place ubuntu in the free space ?

What happens when you select:

Use the largest continuous free space ?

This should use the space where your D: partition used to be (since you have deleted it, it is now free space).

THIS IS WHAT IT SAYS: Should I click INSTALL?

Language: English
Keyboard layout: us
Name: name
Login name: name

Partitioning:
If you continue, the changes listed below will be written to the disks.
Otherwise, you will be able to make further changes manually.

WARNING: This will destroy all data on any partitions you have removed as
well as on the partitions that are going to be formatted.

The following partitions are going to be formatted:
     partition #2 of /dev/hda as ext3
partition #5 of /dev/hda as swap

It looks to me that it has used the space behind the first partition on the first HD. I think that is what you want.

I have no idea; "clicknig INSTALL" what ever happens, happens.
I just hope I don't have any more issues of any sort.

I am sorry if it seems that I have no idea what I am doing - but the manual is not at all informative on installations, I don't think is has anything for installations.

Cheers

Here is the official manual: https://help.ubuntu.com/

Here are the community help pages: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/

There is also an Official book about Ubuntu available.

I hope that helps and congratulations to your Ubuntu installation
