How do I share printers on LAN using Ubuntu

Asked by Grichardt

I am totally green when it comes to using Linux. Ubuntu is my first try. How can I share printers connected to this linux machine with a home networked XP machine? I can see the network, but that is as far as I can go. I can't see shared folders on the other computer and I could not select specific folders on my USB external HD to share. I had to share the whole drive. Not what I had in mind.

You need to install samba server. (sudo apt-get install samba) and edit /etc/samba/smb.conf to configure printer shares

Thank you for the rapid answer, but being a greenie, my initial response
is, "Duh?" I recognize that you are asking me to enter a command
prompt, but I have no idea where to even start. A little more step by
step would surely be appreciated.

Thank you for your suggestion, but only the first paragraph referred to
instructions for a Ubuntu install. After that it switched back to
unix instructions that have no meaning to a Linux neophite such as
myself. I am still stuck in the DUH zone.

Where do I go to enter a command line? I have looked high and low and
there is no obvious answer to that question.

To open a terminal, go to Menu->Accessories->Terminal

Please keep in mind that Linux uses a different file system than Windows, thats why you need something like Samba. Think of Samba as a translator which permits an Italian and an American to talk to each other.

Whats the problem with the instructions I gave you?
If you have Ubuntu you can also launch shell commands by pressing ALT-F2 and inserting the name of the command (in your case gksu shares-admin) in the space (where the cogwheels are).
In your case you don't need to click on the "Run in terminal" options, but I would advise you to do it anyway otherwise you will miss any error message.
Or do you have Kubuntu?

Can you help with this problem?
