why dont computer games on a cd work?

when I put a game cd into the drive the cd loads but i can't run it or play the game...the cd just doesnt run even when i click run cd!!!! it should run when i click run and install atomatically like it did on my other computer but it deosn'teven load or run!!

As most of the cd games you buy in stores are for Windows, they probably won't run on Linux or Mac without an emulator like Wine. You can try to install Wine in Applications > Add/remove. You can find a database of games compatible with Wine in http://www.winehq.org/

I am taking a wild guess here, but could it be you are trying to run a game for a Windows PC under Ubuntu? If that is the case, then this is only possible with a little bit of work. If the game is supported, you can try to install and run it with wine (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine).
