Right click menu not working on GNOME desktop

Asked by Kill Vista

Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit, GNOME desktop
Right click on desktop does nothing (works everywhere else)
Desktop icons and files saved to desktop are not displayed on desktop
Icons and files do appear in desktop folder in Nautilus though

I recently installed (and ended up uninstalling) Kubuntu and noticed the problem shortly after.
Mouse is fine, right click works everywhere else.

Open gconf-editor and make sure that
 /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop
is checked

I had the same problem.
It was nautilus issue, segmentation fault after update.

The solution:
1. delete cached packages from /var/cache/apt
2. disable all third party repositories
3. completely remove nautilus and gnome-session packages
4. reload package data
5. install nautilus and gnome-session
6. reboot

Steps 2-5 easily done from synaptic.

Good luck.
